All Nippon Airways (ANA) has established a centralised cloud network hub with Equinix Fabric, cutting network provisioning time from months to weeks as the airline prepares for a projected tenfold increase in global data volumes.

The Japanese airline said the new infrastructure will support reservations, boarding, customer communications and operational systems. For aviation operations leaders, the project highlights how network architecture is becoming a direct enabler of service delivery, application development and real-time coordination across complex airline environments.

ANA operates approximately 280 aircraft across more than 200 domestic and international routes. As it expanded its use of hybrid and multicloud environments, traditional architectures based on dedicated circuits for individual systems became increasingly complex and costly to scale.

The airline redesigned its network around a software-defined hub, enabling secure, on-demand connections to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud without deploying additional physical circuits.

From infrastructure to operating agility

The reported 80% reduction in provisioning time means resources can be released more quickly for application development and testing. That could help ANA trial new digital services and operational applications without waiting for network changes that previously took months.

The airline said the architecture is intended to support more integrated customer services, real-time operational coordination, advanced analytics, automation and future artificial intelligence workloads. It is also targeting a 30% reduction in five-year total cost of ownership, although the release does not provide a monetary value or explain how the target will be measured.

“Our rapid business expansion demanded a network with unprecedented flexibility,” said Jun Nakazato, manager, IT Infrastructure Team, Digital Governance Department, Digital Transformation Division, All Nippon Airways.

“Rather than continuing to expand our existing network environment, we recognised that implementing network-as-a-service was the most effective path forward.” Jun Nakazato

“Equinix Fabric delivers the dynamic foundation we need to scale seamlessly,” he added. “Equinix serves not merely as a vendor, but as a critical strategic partner in modernising our global systems and enabling our future growth.”

For airline operations executives, the significance is the move away from network capacity being treated as a fixed, separately provisioned asset. A centralised cloud hub can allow connectivity to be adjusted as business requirements change, while centralised policy enforcement supports security and compliance across environments.

Kuniko Ogawa, Equinix's managing director for Japan, said ANA’s deployment demonstrates how enterprises can add flexibility and intelligence to existing physical infrastructure without “ripping and replacing” it.

The approach is consistent with a wider aviation technology focus on scalable digital foundations.
