The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) report, titled “Connectivity Strategies for Smart Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs): Convergence for Connected Living at Scale,” outlines a comprehensive blueprint for transforming residential properties into secure, scalable smart communities.
Addressing fragmentation in MDU connectivity
As urbanisation intensifies, MDUs are becoming increasingly popular. However, they often struggle with growing device densities and fragmented connectivity solutions.
According to the WBA, a shift to fully managed, open-standards-driven architectures is vital for establishing the reliable performance and long-term operational value necessary for modern multi-dwelling environments. This approach not only reduces costs but also unlocks new revenue opportunities for operators.
"The rapid growth of managed service providers in the MDU sector highlights the pressing need for connectivity that supports today’s expectations," noted Tiago Rodrigues, president and CEO of the WBA.
"Reliable, seamless digital experiences across homes and shared spaces are critical for residents, while ensuring predictable performance and operational efficiency for owners and operators." Tiago Rodrigues
The role of managed Wi-Fi and IoT convergence
The report showcases how a fully managed Wi-Fi network, integrated with IoT systems, enhances tenant experiences while providing service providers with a robust platform for premium SLA-based services.
As Wi-Fi shipments to MDUs are expected to more than double by 2030, the integration of open standards and technology convergence becomes increasingly vital.
Significantly, the report identifies several key insights for optimising MDU connectivity. It underscores that fragmented networks fail to meet modern demands, while open standards reduce complexity and prevent vendor lock-in. Additionally, multi-admin capabilities are essential for managing shared infrastructure, ensuring security and privacy across all users.
Transition challenges
The transition to next-generation technologies, such as Wi-Fi 7 and emerging IoT frameworks, offers significant opportunities for MDUs but also introduces challenges that operators must navigate. The report highlights the importance of integrating Property Management Systems (PMS) to streamline onboarding and lifecycle management.
George Hechtman, Project Leader at Hechtman Venture Development, emphasised the necessity of a comprehensive review of technologies deployed in MDUs. "Understanding the diverse stakeholders and use cases is crucial for resolving connectivity challenges and providing immense value to property owners."
Preparing for the future of smart living
As residents increasingly demand multi-gigabit, always-on connectivity for work and entertainment, WBA's report serves as a crucial guide for COOs and business leaders in Asia.
By implementing the recommended strategies, organisations can transform connectivity from a cost centre into a revenue-generating asset, creating smarter, more sustainable living environments.
