PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA) has marked a significant milestone in the Indonesian mining sector by becoming the first open-pit coal mine in the region to implement automation technology at its Kalimantan site. The company has partnered with RCT, a specialist in automation solutions, to enhance operational safety and efficiency.
At the heart of this initiative are two Komatsu dozers—the D155 and D375—equipped with RCT's automation technology. These dozers feature Line-of-Sight and portable vision capabilities, which aim to provide operators with improved visibility while working in potentially hazardous environments.
"This project is an important and historic moment for improving operational safety management in the Indonesian coal mining world," remarked Pak Ridha, head of SHE Management Development at PAMA. The decision to transition from manual operations to automation was primarily motivated by safety concerns.
"Mining involves several high-risk areas related to bulldozer work, such as near water, mud, cliffs, heights, and land clearing areas. With this application of technology, the level of risk in these areas can be reduced significantly," Mr Ridha explained. The use of automation is expected to mitigate dangers associated with traditional bulldozer operations.
RCT's Account Manager, Shane Smith, emphasised that the technology was specifically designed to enhance safety in mining operations. "The solution was ideal to dramatically improve safety, removing the operators from the dozer and allowing them to carry out their role from a safe position on site," he said. The dozers will primarily operate in tailing ponds and dams, areas recognised for their perilous conditions.
This project was executed by RCT's bespoke department, RCT Custom, which tailored the portable vision feature to meet the specific needs of PAMA. "We firmly believe in catering to a client's exact needs, so this is where our custom department is so important. They can create and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions," Smith added.
Looking ahead, Ridha stated that PAMA plans to further develop and implement these automation competencies, viewing them as a strategic advantage in promoting sustainable business practices within the industry.
