SK Telecom and LG Electronics have announced plans to jointly develop autonomous robots connected to a 5G-based cloud platform.
The 5G business robots are envisioned to provide physical security and guidance services and will be deployed to diverse facilities to detect abnormalities.
Moreover, the partners said they are building eSpace, a hyperspace platform for replicating the real world in cyberspace, by collecting spatial data and precise photos. This is expected to enable the provision of high quality virtual space services at minimal additional cost.
“SK Telecom’s ICT such as 5G and AI will converge with LG Electronics’ robot-building expertise to realize innovative and attractive robot services,” said Park Jin-hyo, Chief Technology Officer and Head of ICT R&D Center of SK Telecom, in a news release.
Under the plan, the robots will be connected to the cloud through SK Telecom’s 5G network. More advanced capabilities and features will be moved to the cloud later to improve the robots’ information-processing performance and support interconnection among multiple robots.
SK Telecom said it is also looking to apply its self-developed AI Inference Accelerator (AIX), which performs accelerated processing for AI services such as voice/video recognition; and SK Telecom Cloud for AI Learning (SCALE), enables users to develop and manage AI technologies and services by virtualizing multiple GPU resources required for high-performance AI calculation.
Moreover, its 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology will be applied to the 5G-based cloud to support ultra-low latency communication.
The memorandum of understanding to jointly develop and commercialize 5G cloud-based robots between SK Telecom and SK Telecom LG Electronics was signed on June 25.
