A recent survey conducted by ABI Research reveals that 64% of manufacturing decision-makers emphasize the importance of robust onboarding and ongoing support when evaluating new vendors. This finding comes from the 2024 Manufacturers’ Technology Adoption & Attitudes Survey, which gathered insights from 461 leaders across the United States, Malaysia, and Germany.
Michael Larner, distinguished analyst at ABI Research, highlights a key concern: “Improving quality and productivity levels are key objectives for survey respondents. However, an overriding concern is how to deploy the technologies to achieve those objectives.” Manufacturers are increasingly looking for assurance that they will receive adequate training and support to effectively utilise new technologies.
The survey indicates that while vendors often focus on demonstrating potential returns on investment, these benefits can be delayed if users struggle to understand or implement the solutions. “To avoid this, the vendor or their partners must be present during the initial launch,” Larner advises, stressing the need for comprehensive training resources that align with the manufacturers' workflows. He emphasizes that a strict follow-up plan is essential for fostering customer confidence and ensuring successful technology adoption.
The challenges extend beyond vendor relationships. Many manufacturers are grappling with difficulties in recruiting and retaining skilled staff. This skill gap not only hinders technology deployment but also limits the ability to fully exploit the opportunities that digital solutions can provide. Larner notes, “Hand holding by the vendor will be required when manufacturers are devising Proofs of Concept (PoCs), evaluating suppliers, and implementing solutions at their facilities.”
These insights underscore a growing trend within the manufacturing sector: the necessity for strong vendor partnerships that prioritize educational support and ongoing assistance. As the industry evolves, the ability to swiftly adapt to new technologies will be critical for maintaining competitiveness.
