Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, providing customers in Malaysia and across the Asia Pacific region with greater choice and lower latency for running their workloads and storing data securely. This new region reflects AWS's long-term commitment to meeting the growing demand for cloud services in Malaysia and the broader Asia Pacific market.
AWS plans to invest more than $6.2 billion (approximately MYR 29.2 billion) in Malaysia through 2038, supporting an average of more than 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually. The construction and operation of the new AWS Region are estimated to add approximately $12.1 billion (MYR 57.3 billion) to Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP).
Tengku Zafrul, Minister of Investment Trade & Industry, says the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region is a significant milestone for the country's digital transformation. It will provide access to new and emerging technologies, including AI and machine learning, for Malaysian entities and businesses of all sizes, helping to fulfil the vision of Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to build a highly-skilled, innovative, and sustainable economy.
The new region is part of AWS's global infrastructure, which now includes 108 Availability Zones across 34 geographic regions, with plans to launch 18 more Availability Zones and six more AWS Regions in the future. The Malaysia region consists of three Availability Zones, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance for customers' applications.
Reflecting on the market opportunities for the country, Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS, says the new AWS Region in Malaysia enables organisations across the Asia-Pacific to deploy advanced applications with a broad set of AWS technologies like AI and ML.
“Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure. With today’s launch, AWS is proud to support Malaysia’s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for AI,” he continued.
With the broad and deep portfolio of services offered by AWS, customers in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region can leverage advanced cloud technologies to drive innovation, meet data residency preferences, achieve lower latency, and serve the growing demand for cloud services.
